<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal display wherein an image free from gradation inversion and having high quality can be displayed. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display provided with a liquid crystal cell comprising a pair of transparent substrates 11 provided opposite to each other and each provided with a transparent electrode 12 on the inner surface side thereof and a liquid crystal layer 14 wherein a liquid crystal material having bend-alignment when the liquid crystal material is driven is held between a pair of the substrates 11, polarizing plates 16 provided on the both sides of the liquid crystal cell, and an optical compensation element 15 provided between the liquid crystal cell and at least one polarizing plate 16 is so designed that the difference R between the front retardation of the liquid crystal layer 14 in 550 nm wavelength when white is displayed and that when black is displayed satisfies 100 nm≤R≤185 nm. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
