PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an optical fiber preform by depositing a glass particle generated by a flame reaction, particularly contrived to prevent bubbles from remaining in the preform and to prolong the service life of a burner. SOLUTION: This production method for the optical fiber preform includes supplying an inert gas or a mixture thereof with oxygen to a gas passage 210 of the outermost layer of an oxyhydrogen flame burner 200 in a process for depositing the glass particle thereby. Since the flow of the inert gas or gas mixture acts as a fire resistant gas flow barrier without reacting hard with adjacent hydrogen inside the burner, a burner tip is protected resulting in production of the high quality optical fiber.
