PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical film such as a protective film for a polarizing plate, the optical film which has excellent adhesiveness with a polyvinylalcohol sheet and which can be produced by a process safe for working and giving no adverse influences on the environment and to provide a polarizing plate, a liquid crystal display, and an image display material by using the above film.

SOLUTION: The optical film has a layer having ≥10.0 mN/m polar component of the surface energy obtained by plasma discharge treatment in the presence of an organic compound having an unsaturated bond.
