PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new transition metal compound useful as a catalyst for polymerization capable of producing both a norbornene-based ring polymer and an ethylene orα-olefin addition polymer, the catalyst for olefin polymerization containing the compound, and to provide a method for producing the olefin polymer by using the catalyst for polymerization. SOLUTION: The transition metal compound is represented by formula (1) (wherein a dotted line is a coordination bond; M is Mo or W atom; R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each independently hydrogen atom, a 1-12C alkyl group or the line; R<SP>3</SP>to R<SP>15</SP>are each hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a 1-12C alkyl group or the like; X is a halogen atom; n is a number satisfying a valence of M). The catalyst for olefin polymerization comprises the compound and the organometallic reducing agent.
