<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing optically active carboxylic acids and amides which are industrially useful compounds as intermediate raw materials for medicines, agrochemicals, or the like. <P>SOLUTION: A new stereoselective amide hydrolase derived from Pseudomonas azotoformans IAM1603, and a DNA encoding the enzyme are provided. The chiral carboxylic acid or amide (including an N-alkylamide), especially the chiral nitrogen-containing heterocyclic carboxylic acid or the amide thereof is produced by stereoselectively hydrolyzing an amide by using the amide hydrolase.
