PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engraving method by which a satisfactory engraving profundity can be achieved regardless of the shape of an engraved region such as a flat surface or a curved surface and also an engraving region located at a secluded spot can be easily engraved, and further, a choice can be made of any sectional shape of an engraved groove among various kinds of such shapes and an engraving work is interesting and appealing with a power of expression, and a cutter retainer and an engraving machine. SOLUTION: A cutter retainer 11 capable of controlling its operating position to a work to be engraved is attached to the engraving machine 1a. Further, a motor-driven hand piece 13 is mounted on the cutter retainer 11 in a freely attachable/detachable manner and an engraving operation is performed using the motor-driven hand piece 13.
