PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of efficiently producing a fatty acid ester including a reduced amount of impurities by subjecting fat and oil, and alcohol to transesterification in the presence of an acidic catalyst. SOLUTION: The ester production process comprises a step of the transesterification reaction between a fat and oil, and an alcohol in the presence of an acidic catalyst, a step of the removal of glycerol as a by-product through liquid-liquid separation, a step of the neutralization of the acidic catalyst with an aqueous alkaline solution, and a step of the washing the product with water. In this case, the alcohol is placed in the reaction system in a amount of 5-35 wt.% based on the theoretical yield of the ester in the reaction step after the transesterification step and before the glycerol removal step.
