PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic disk drive capable of realizing a reliable reproduction compensating function which compensates a reproductive signal on the basis of a conversion transmission characteristic of an MR type read head in the magnetic disk drive of a vertical magnetic recording system using a disk of two layer structure in particular. SOLUTION: The disk 1 of the two layer structure and the disk drive of a vertical magnetic recording system using the MR type read head are disclosed. A data channel 10 comprises a reproduction compensation circuit 13 which comprises: a detection circuit 130 capable of precisely deciding the conversion transmission characteristic of the read head from model parameters (A, B and mgp) from the reproductive signal; and an inversion circuit 131 for compensating nonlinear distortion included in the reproductive signal on the basis of the conversion transmission characteristic.
