NONAQUEOUS ELECTROLYTE BATTERY

A battery having a negative electrode comprising a negative electrode mixture layer wherein a mixture of spherical carbonaceous materials having different average particle diameters is used as an active material of negative electrode. The spherical carbonaceous material with greater particle diameter reduces the reaction with nonaqueous electrolytic solution to thereby suppress a drop of battery capacity, and forms interstices of appropriate size in the negative electrode mixture layer to thereby attain retention of the nonaqueous electrolytic solution. On the other hand, the spherical carbonaceous material with smaller particle diameter is efficiently packed while ensuring the presence of such a space that the nonaqueous electrolytic solution can be appropriately retained in the interstices of the negative electrode mixture layer, thereby enhancing the volume density of negative electrode mixture layer and increasing the battery capacity. Therefore, the energy density can be increased without deterioration of battery performance.
