The device for the aligning of paper sheets by a side edge, in addition to detecting an actual position of the side edge of the sheet laid on the front marks (2), records the actual position of the side edge in a sequence of measurements by a measuring device (10), while the sheet (7) to be aligned covers a distance (s) of 2-10mm, whereby the measuring device is connected to a computing device (18) to form an actual average value from the sum of the recorded actual value.
