PURPOSE: An apparatus for preventing the copy of a mobile communication terminal and a method therefor are provided to block the use of the mobile communication terminal in which an ESN(Electronic Serial Number) is illegally copied, by discriminating whether a received ESN or S/N(Serial Number) is identical to an ESN or S/N retrieved from a mapping table of a common carrier and approving service registration in case that the received ESN or S/N is identical to the ESN or S/N retrieved from the mapping table. CONSTITUTION: A base station transmits a paging signal at a uniform time interval, for inquiring a mobile communication terminal which enters within a frequency transmitting/receiving range(S1). The mobile communication terminal detects an ESN and a phone number from a memory unit of the mobile communication terminal by service registration information, and transmits the ESN and the phone number to the base station(S2). The mobile communication terminal detects an S/N stored in a ROM, and transmits the S/N to the base station(S3). If service registration information including the ESN, the phone number, and the S/N is received from the mobile communication terminal, the base station retrieves an ESN or S/N corresponding to the received ESN or S/N from a mapping table of a common carrier. If the ESN or S/N is retrieved, the base station discriminates whether the retrieved ESN or S/N is identical to the received ESN or S/N. If the retrieved ESN or S/N is identical to the received ESN or S/N, the base station approves the registration of the mobile communication terminal and provides a communication service to the mobile communication terminal.
