PURPOSE: A cosmetic containing an Armeniacae Semen extract having melanin-production inhibiting activity as an effective ingredient is provided which is effective in the prevention of the formation of unwanted skin pigmentation such as chloasma, freckles, sun burn or the like. CONSTITUTION: Armeniacae Semen is extracted in a polar solvent such as ethanol, methanol, propanol, butanol, amyl alcohol and acetone, concentrated and then reextracted in a low polarity solvent such as ethyl acetate, diethyl ether, benzene or chloroform. A skin whitening cosmetic contains 0.00001 to 5%(w/v) of the Armeniacae Semen extract on a dried weight basis. The Armeniacae Semen extract exhibits strong melanin synthesis inhibiting effect as compared to that extracted in conventional polar solvents when applied to human tyrosinase.
