PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To smoothly switch a communication mode when a mobile station moves from inside of a base station area to outside of the base station area or moves from the outside of the base station area to the inside of the base station area in a digital wireless system including a base station ordinarily transmitting a signal. SOLUTION: When the mobile station is set to a base station communication mode and detects no synchronous word in an outgoing signal from a base station, the mobile station discriminates that it resides in the outside of the base station area, automatically controls selection of an inter-mobile station direct communication mode, and informs an operator about it by means of monitor display or in voice. Further, when the mobile station is set to the inter-mobile station direct communication mode and periodically monitors the outgoing signal from the base station to detect the synchronous word, the mobile station discriminates that it stays the inside of the base station area and informs the operator about it by means of monitor display or in voice so as to allow the operator to switch the communication mode.
