PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader and its sensitivity adjusting method, capable of eliminating influence of abnormal pixel data detected by an abnormal pixel and setting suitable image reading sensitivity to obtain a good object image in the regular image reading operation. SOLUTION: A controller 150 has a function of setting an image read sensitivity for performing the operation (sensitivity adjusting read operation) of reading an image for adjusting the sensitivity in an arbitrary timing prior to the regular image reading operation to read the object image at optimum, and a function of eliminating specified pixel data (specified data eliminating operation) to prevent or restrain the influence of abnormal pixel data due to foreign matter (dust) adhering to the detecting surface or an element defect existing in a photo sensor array from the pixel data read in the sensitivity adjusting read operation.
