PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To classify a plurality of image data according to user's desire. SOLUTION: The plurality of image data 10 are classified into a plurality of reference groups 12, 14 in advance. This classification is preferably made according to the user's desire, purpose or the like. For the image data belonging to these reference groups, a distance is calculated based on a plurality of types of distance definitions by a distance calculating means 18. Using an evaluating means 20, the image data 10 are classified again based on the distance, and a comparative evaluation is made with previous classification. Based on the distance definitions in which the nearest classification to the initial one is made, image data which have not been classified yet are classified. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
