PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid-state image pickup element which is suitable for miniaturization of an image pickup device. SOLUTION: The image pickup element 30 consists of an image pickup section 31, a storage section 32, and first and second horizontal transfer sections 33, 35. The section 31 has a plurality of light-receiving pixels which are arranged in a matrix form and stores information charges generated, corresponding to an incident light in each of the pixels. The section 32 fetches the information charges of an amount for one screen which are stored in the section 31 to store them temporarily. The stored charges are transferred and outputted in either a first direction or a second direction. The section 33 takes in the information charges transferred and outputted from the section 32 in the first direction line by line, and transfers and outputs them successively pixel by pixel in the horizontal direction. The section 35 takes in the information charges, transmitted and outputted from the section 32 in the second direction line by line, and transmits and outputs them successively pixel by pixel in the horizontal direction.
