PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for performing a recognition by combination of partial patterns of an object to be recognized in a pattern recognition device for recognizing the object to be recognized by comparing an image of the object to be recognized with a model preliminarily registered in a table. SOLUTION: In the pattern recognition device, the image of the object to be recognized is inputted, a plurality of characteristic points are extracted from the inputted image, and a combination of the characteristic points is selected. Bases showing the positions or positional relations of these characteristic points are calculated, and a partial pattern corresponding to each base is extracted from the image. The retrieval place of the table is decided on the basis of an invariable parameter for the geometric conversion of the partial patterns, and the similarity of the partial pattern of the object to be recognized to the partial pattern of the model registered in the retrieval place of the table is determined. A plurality of pieces of hypothesis information that the object to be recognized is present in the image are generated on the basis of the similarity of both the partial patterns to decide the discrimination, position, attitude or the like of the object to be recognized.
