A phthalimido arylpiperazine derivative or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or a stereoisomer, a racemic mixture or an enantiomer thereof has the formula I wherein: R1 is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl or hydroxyl; R2 is alkyl, haloalkyl, phenyl or phenylalkyl; R3 is hydrogen, hydroxy or alkoxy if the hashed line is absent or is oxygen if the hashed line is present; R4 is hydrogen, alkyl, or optionally substituted phenylalkyl; R5 is hydrogen, halogen, hydroxy, haloalkyl, alkyl, alkylamino, dialkylamino, alkylcarbonyl, alkoxy, amino, alkoxycarbonyl, nitrile, or nitro; R6 is hydrogen, halogen, hydroxy, haloalkyl, alkyl alkylamino, dialkylamino, alkylcarbonyl, alkoxy, amino, nitro or alkoxycarbonyl; R7 is hydrogen, halogen, hydroxy, haloalkyl, alkyl, alkoxy, amino, alkylamino, dialkylamino, alkylcarbonyl, alkoxycarbonyl or nitro; A is nitrogen or carbon; B is nitrogen or carbon; E is nitrogen or carbon; with the proviso that only one of A, B, or E is nitrogen. The compounds are useful for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia.
