A 2"-deoxy-hygromycin A derivative or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, prodrug, or solvate thereof has the formula (I) wherein: R1 is H and R2 is-NR3R4, -NR4C(O)R3, -OC(O)NR3R4 or -OR3 or R1 and R2 taken together form =O, =N-OR3, =CR4R3, =CR4C(O)R3, =CR4C(O)OR3 or =CR4C(O)NR3R4; each R3 is independently H or optionally substituted alkyl, alkenyl, -(CH2)t-cycloalkyl, -(CH2)t-aryl or -(CH2)t-(4 to 10 membered heterocyclic); the alkyl group can contain 1 or 2 hetero moieties selected from -O-, -S(O)j- and -N(R7)- with the proviso that two O atoms, two S atoms, or an O and S atom are not attached directly to each other; the cycloalkyl, aryl and heterocyclic R3 groups can be fused to a benzene ring, saturated cyclic group, or a 4-10 membered heterocyclic group; t is 0 to 5 and the -(CH2)t- moieties of the foregoing R3 groups can include a carbon-carbon double or triple bond when t is an integer between 2 and 5; j is 0 to 2 and each R4 and R7 is independently H or alkyl. The compounds are useful for treating bacterial or protozoal infections or disorders related to bacterial or protozoal infections.
