PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the processing time of a format for write and read to/from the tape storage device of a helical scan system. SOLUTION: When reading, track data read from heads HA and HB on a drum 70 are stored in appropriate track slots S1-S5 in a memory 80. Through a DMA control unit 84, an error processing circuit 88 or the like accesses and processes the data. For recording formats of the data onto a tape, interleaving is performed between two tracks (frames), and when transferring processed data to the memory, they are transferred not by a frame unit but by a track unit.
