PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reliable electric double layer capacitor that has a small resistance and a high breakdown voltage. SOLUTION: In an electric double layer capacitor that has a pair of polarizable electrodes and an electric double layer at the boundary surface of the polarizable electrodes, the capacitor of the invention contains as an electrolyte the salt expressed by R<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>R<SP>3</SP>R<SP>4</SP>N<SP>+</SP>X<SP>-</SP>(R<SP>1</SP>is an n-propyl group, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP>are independently methyl or ethyl group. Two selected out of R<SP>1</SP>-R<SP>4</SP>may form a tetramethylene group together. X<SP>-</SP>represents an anion), and uses an electrolyte containing at least dimethylcarbonate as the solvent.
