摘要 PURPOSE: A back light unit is provided to achieve improved luminance efficiency of the back light unit, while reducing power consumption. CONSTITUTION: A back light unit comprises an upper substrate(23) and a lower substrate(11) each of which has one or more electrodes(13), wherein the upper substrate and the lower substrate are coupled with each other so as to form a discharge space for generating a plasma; and a discharge gas(18) filling the discharge space formed between the upper substrate and the lower substrate, wherein the discharge gas is mixed with the gas for emitting a long wavelength ultraviolet ray of 250 to 400nm during discharge; and a phosphor(21) formed at the surface of the upper substrate and/or the lower substrate directed toward the discharge space, wherein the phosphor has a maximum quantum efficiency in the long wavelength ultraviolet region of 250 to 400nm. The phosphor is excited by the ultraviolet ray of the long wavelength ultraviolet region and emits a visible light.
