<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical recording medium which has a recording density equal to or higher than DVD and enables execution of recording of high linear velocity to the velocity (17.5 m/s) about five times higher than that of the DVD and which shows uniform distribution of reflectance after initial crystallization and also can diminish jitter. <P>SOLUTION: The optical recording medium has a constitution wherein at least a lower protective layer/a phase change recording layer/an upper protective layer/a reflecting layer are formed in this sequence or in the reverse sequence on a transparent base, and recording and reproduction are conducted by irradiation with a laser light from the lower protective layer side, by making use of a reversible phase change between an amorphous phase and a crystal phase of the recording layer.
