<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which can reduce its running cost by extending the life of an intermediate transfer body. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus has a photoreceptor for holding a latent image thereon, an exposure means for forming a latent image on the photoreceptor, a developing means for forming a toner image by developing the latent image, and an intermediate transfer body for transferring the toner image. The image forming apparatus controls start of the operation of the exposure means according to a reference signal applied for starting image formation.
