The device has a deformation unit (5) with a mouth piece (6) for deforming, preferably flanging, the end of a pipe (4) extending through both flat parts. The pipe is placed on a guide arrangement (8) or the guide arrangement is inserted into the pipe and extends through the pipe with a mouth piece on one end for deforming the pipe. The deformation unit engages the other end of the guide arrangement and moves the two mouth pieces together. AN Independent claim is also included for the following: a method of joining flat parts.
