PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for detecting abnormality at a low cost, which can rapidly detect a rugged area in an end face of a metallic ring. SOLUTION: The device is provided with drive means 2, 3 which drive the metallic ring W rotationally, contact means 4, 12 which are arranged so as to be in contact with the end face of the metallic ring and moved by being engaged to the rugged area 10 in the end face, and an abnormality detecting means 6, 13 which measures the amount of movement of the contact means 4, 12 and detects the abnormality of the end face of the metallic ring W. In the case the contact means is made up of a detecting gear 4 which has a plurality of tooth 7 along its periphery engaging the rugged area 10 and rotates when the tooth 7 engage the rugged area 10, a rotation detecting means 6 which detects the amount of rotation of the detecting gear 4 is used as the abnormality detecting means. In the case the contact means is made up of a plate-like elastic member 12 which is held at one edge and engages the rugged area 10 at the other edge, a deformation detecting device 13 which detects a deformation of the plate-like elastic member 12 as the amount of movement, is used as the abnormality detecting means.
