PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition having a high order parameter, and a liquid crystal element. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition comprises a compound represented by general formula (1) and a liquid crystalline compound. A guest- host type liquid crystal element comprising the compound represented by general formula (1) as a dichroic dye is also provided. In formula (1), R<SP>1</SP>is an alkyl group or a cycloalkyl group, and R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP>, R<SP>5</SP>, R<SP>6</SP>, R<SP>7</SP>and R<SP>8</SP>are each a hydrogen atom or a substituting group.
