<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a waveguide type liquid crystal optical switch which has a low power consumption, a small insertion loss, and a low cost and doesn't have polarization dependence. <P>SOLUTION: The waveguide type liquid crystal switch is provided with an optical waveguide having a pair of first and second cores close to each other to switch an optical path between both cores and is provided with a third core wherein a nematic liquid crystal aligned in a prescribed direction by an aligned layer is filled in a space covering the first and second cores in parallel with a plane including the optical axes of the first and second cores, a space interposed between the first and second cores, or a space spreading over the first and second cores and covering only the upper faces of the first and second cores, a first electrode arranged so as to cover a gap part between the first and second cores on the side opposite to the first and second cores of the third core, a second electrode and a third electrode which are arranged as a pair with the first electrode between them and aligns liquid crystal molecules in a direction orthogonal to the aligning direction of the aligned layer, and a clad for collectively enveloping the first core, the second core, the third core, and respective electrodes. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO</p> |
