PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water soluble cutting lubricant which excels in the dispersibility and redispersibility of abrasive grains in a slurry, has high cutting efficiency, excels in the accuracy of the cut surface and, simultaneously, can be easily washed with water without using a solvent or the like even in the cleaning step of removing the slurry after cutting and, in addition, has no fear of flammability like a non-water soluble lubricant, can be easily cleaned even if the slurry flies to adhere and accumulate on the surface of a cutting processing machine, the floor and the like not to cause the deterioration of the working environment, and contributes to the improvement of productivity, and a method for cutting a brittle material. SOLUTION: The water soluble cutting lubricant comprises at least one compound to be selected from the group consisting of a polyhydric alcohol, a polyhydric alcohol condensate, and a polyhydric alcohol derivative, an aromatic carboxylic acid, a basic substance which neutralizes the aromatic carboxylic acid to render it.water soluble, and water, and the method for cutting a brittle material uses this lubricant.
