<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust emission control apparatus for an internal combustion engine which can efficiently purify both HC and NOx in a cold state. <P>SOLUTION: A HC trap (20) is installed in an exhaust passage (14). The trap (20) is provided with; a 1st catalyst layer containing a HC adsorbent (β-type zeolite) having a HC adsorptive function, and a 2nd catalyst layer formed on the surface of the 1st catalyst layer and containing at least one of a noble metal selected from the group composed of platinum, rhodium and palladium and a NOx adsorption material (barium or potassium) having a NOx adsorptive function. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
