PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a water absorbent composite material which is light in weight, thin in size, high in water absorption properties when used repeatedly, and excellent in texture, processability, and safety and in which a water absorbent resin is distributed uniformly, and mechanical stress lowering or the movement of the water absorbent resin after absorbing water to a constant level is controlled. SOLUTION: In the water absorbent composite material, the water absorbent resin containing the hydrolyzate of a polymer comprising acrylonitrile polymerization units as a main component is joined onto a base material.
