PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rolling element for a high bearing pressure metallic rolling element used for a toroidal type continuously variable transmission, etc., excellent in surface fatigue strength on a rolling surface and excellent in flexural fatigue strength on a non-rolling surface. SOLUTION: The rolling elements 1, 2, 3 effective hardened layer depth on the rolling surfaces of which is more than 2Zst and less than 5Zst and effective hardened layer depth of the non-rolling surfaces of which is more than 0.3 mm and less than 80% of the effective hardened layer depth of the rolling surfaces in the case when generating depth of the maximum shearing stress generated in the inside of the rolling elements by surface contact is specified as Zst by applying plasma carburizing hardening and tempering treatment on steel for mechanical structure.
