PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain high luminance and high output while providing a transmitting original illumination device with a sufficient diffusion effect. SOLUTION: The image reader having an original reading light source for illuminating an original is provided with a light guiding body 31 for diffusing light from the light source, the light source arranged in the vicinity of the side face opposed to the light emitting surface of the light guiding body 31, an approximately plane reflector arranged on the upper part of the light guiding body 31 in order to reflect light from the light source toward the light guiding body 31, and an image reading part for reading out an original image illuminated by light from the light source. A plurality of approximately cylindrical grooves 31 are formed on the light guiding body 31 to collect light to the light emitting surface of the light guiding body 31. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
