<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the quality of a displayed image by forming the image of light as an illumination region of a projector to which an SCR is applied with high accuracy. <P>SOLUTION: A relay optical system for forming the image of the light at the light exit surface of an integrator rod on the prescribed illumination region includes a first optical element for correcting at least a distortion aberration among the aberrations which can occur in the image of the light formed as the prescribed illumination region and a second optical element for correcting at least a chromatic aberration. The first optical element includes at least one converging lens having an aspheric convex surface and the second optical element includes at least one diverging lens having a spherical concave surface. The diverging lens is formed of an optical glass material of relatively high dispersion having an Abbe number below 40.
