PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a scanning system capable of processing different paper sizes with a single device, merging the functions of a platen scanner and a sheet-fed scanner and flexibly attaching the platen scanner to the sheet-fed scanner. SOLUTION: A modular scanning system 10 is constituted of a first scanning unit 11 and a plurality of tethered scanners 13 and provides documents or photographs captured both of sheet-fed scanning and platen scanning. The 1st scanning part 11 includes all the mechanisms necessary to permit sheet-fed scanning of documents. The platen scanner 13 provides a second scanning unit which performs platen scanning of documents on a glass top 26 of the platen scanner 13. Since the platen scanner 13 is detachable, a user has an option to select the platen scanning functionality but with the additional flexibility of selectively mounting or storing a platen element.
