PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the time for reading charges by dispersing charges transferred to two horizontal transfer registers. SOLUTION: 1280 sets of vertical transfer registers 18b, 18b' are individually allotted to 1280 sets of vertical columns of photo detectors 18a continuing in the vertical direction. Charges generated by 640 sets of odd-numbered photo detectors and 640 sets of even-numbered photo detectors in the 1280 sets of vertical columns are fed to horizontal transfer registers 18c, 18c', respectively. The charges are then outputted from a CCD imager 18 via the horizontal transfer register 18c or 18c'. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
