A device is provided that is adapted for use underwater for connection to an optical cable, the optical cable (1) having an electrically conducting member arranged along it. The device comprises a tone generator (8) for connecting to the electrically conducting member (6) of the optical cable, wherein the tone generator is arranged to transmit a toning signal along the electrically conducting member (6).
