The safety belt tensioner has a retraction device (8) for automatically shortening the belt (1) with a parameter-controlled drive (7) that provides sufficient force, e.g. 20 kN, for full retraction of a safety belt that may be loose when a danger signal is produced. The device has a retraction device (8) for automatically shortening the belt (1), a withdrawal lock (5) activated for certain parameters, especially a defined vehicle acceleration or deceleration, its build-up and/or exceeding a defined belt withdrawal rate, and preferably a non-reversible clamp (6) which, on generation of an accident signal, e.g. for triggering an airbag, irreversibly clamps the belt with a strong force, e.g. 4,000 N, holding a preferred occupant position for a short period of 10 to 15 ms. The retraction device has a parameter-controlled drive (7) that provides sufficient force, e.g. 20 kN, for full retraction of a belt that may be loose when a danger signal is produced.
