The circuit has two switching transistors (6, 7) to ignite and operate a discharge lamp (1) at a resonant frequency. A digital control circuit (12) controls the transistors and initiates shutdown operation of a safety shutdown device. The device shuts down a power supply at a threshold value in the region of high supply current of the transistors.
