PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that, in pulse metal-inert-gas (MIG) welding where a peak period Tp and a base period are repeated as one pulse period, a peak voltage value in the peak period, with which an arc length is controlled, fluctuates due to a transient voltage fluctuation or disturbances such as droplet rupture and cathode point shift, so that no accurate control of the arc length can be conducted. SOLUTION: A steady-state peak voltage in a steady-state peak period Tpb other than a transient peak period Tpa at the beginning (time t1) of the peak period Tp is detected. The pulse period is controlled to have a center pulse period, which is set in accordance with a means current set value, as its center value, so that the steady-state peak voltage value becomes approximately equal to a predetermined peak current set value. Thus, the proper value of the arc length is maintained. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
