A high density recording medium excellent in a coercive force and excellent also in read write characteristics such as N/S ratio and thermal stability of the magnetic recording layer, and a magnetic recording apparatus employing it, are presented. A magnetic recording medium comprising a substrate and, formed sequentially thereon, at least a non-magnetic interlayer made of a Co alloy and a Co alloy magnetic recording layer, wherein the crystal structures of the interlayer and the magnetic recording layer are both hcp structures, and the relation between the crystal lattice constant (Li) of the interlayer and the crystal lattice constant (Lm) of the magnetic recording layer, satisfies the following formula:and a magnetic recording apparatus employing it.
