Each engine cylinder (1) comprises two exhaust valves (4,5) with independent control means (7). The turbocharger (6) does not have a gas discharge device. The exhaust conduit (10) associated with one (5) of the two exhaust valves of each cylinder communicates directly with the turbine (11) and the exhaust conduit (12) of the other exhaust valve communicates directly with the catalyser (9). The control means are provide in order to hold closed the exhaust valves associated with the turbine and to make the exhaust valves associated with the catalyser to operate normally during the engine reheating phase and when the engine has a low load.
