PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable reducing in size of a transmitter and decreasing of a cost by integrating an attenuator of an optical signal with a semiconductor laser element. SOLUTION: The semiconductor laser element comprises a light source for emitting a laser beam and a modulator for modulating the beam and integrated with the light source on a semiconductor substrate, so that the attenuator for regulating the optical output of the beam is formed in a similar layer structure to the light source on the substrate. Thus, the attenuator which has heretofore been a separate component can be integrated with the laser element by applying a conventional element forming process by constituting the attenuator similarly to the light source.
