<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transflective liquid crystal device wherein display brightness in a transmissive mode can be enhanced while display brightness in a reflective mode is maintained and which has excellent visibility. <P>SOLUTION: In the transflective liquid crystal device 10 provided with a cholesteric reflection layer 12 provided on the inner surface side of a color filter substrate (a lower substrate) 11 and reflecting at least a portion of circularly polarized light having a prescribed rotary direction and an upper substrate side elliptically polarized light emitting means for emitting elliptically polarized light to a liquid crystal layer 30 from a counter substrate (an upper substrate) 21 side, the liquid crystal layer 30 has 0 to 12° twist angle and 0.37±0.05 μm value Δn.d or 130±20° twist angle and 0.76±0.05 μm value Δn.d and the liquid crystal layer 30 is so constituted that the rotary direction of the elliptically polarized light of the incident light is reversed when non-selective voltage is applied and the rotary direction of the elliptically polarized light of the incident light is not reversed when selective voltage is applied. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
