PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a satisfactory image with dust and flaws removed in an image reader for reading image information of a transmitted original in such a manner that a light source unit scans the image information while synchronizing with an image reading unit. SOLUTION: At an operation for reading a transmitted original, an infrared LED chip 8a on a LED substrate 8 for detecting dust and flaws and an illumination lamp 7 for a transmitted original are turned on, the position of the LED substrate 8 and the image reading unit 10 is adjusted, the light source unit 3 and the image reading unit 10 are caused to move in a sub-scanning direction while synchronizing the light source unit 3 with the image reading unit 10, and dust and flaw detection image information is thereby obtained. Then, the position of the illumination lamp 7 for a transmitted original and the image reading unit 10 is adjusted, the light source unit 3 and the image reading unit 10 are caused to move in a sub-scanning direction while synchronizing the light source unit 3 with the image reading unit 10, and the image information of the transmitted original is thereby obtained.
