PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical scanner having a self-propelled light bar assembly. SOLUTION: Optical scanners 110, 210 and 310 are realized which have main bodies 102, 202 and 302 and self-propelled light bar assemblies 110, 210 and 310 supported within the main bodies. In one example, the scanner further has a drive track 154, 154A and 354 inside the main body, and the light bar assembly has a drive wheel 132, 332 and 333 in contact with the drive track. This allows the drive wheel to propel the light bar assembly with respect to the main body. In another example, a scanner 200 is provided with a main body 202 and a magnetic-tack portion 254 of a linear electric motor fixedly supported within the main body. The assembly 210 has a slider portion of the motor and is supported in the main body so as to place the magnet-track portion in proximity to the slider portion.
