A method for initializing an optical recording medium that reduces the initialization variation due to light interference caused in initializing without degrading the information recording/reproduction signal characteristics of the optical recording layers which a recording medium has. At a step of initializing a first optical recording layer (16) by irradiating the first optical recording layer (16) with an initializing light beam from above a protective layer (18), the relation ID2 / ID1 <= 0.002 is satisfied where ID1 is the energy density per unit area of the incident light of the initializing light beam focused at each point in the focus area of the first optical recording layer (16) and ID2 is the energy density at each point of the focus area per unit area of the returning light transmitting the first optical recording layer (16), reaching a second optical recording layer (12), reflected from the same, and returning to the first optical recording layer (16).
