An engine 20 with a lockable valve actuator 70 and method of controlling an engine 70 with such an actuator 70 are disclosed. The actuator 70 may include an actuator cylinder 72 with an actuator piston 76 reciprocatingly disposed therein. The actuator piston 76 may be moved by directing pressurized fluid into the actuator cylinder 72, and locked into a given position by maintaining the pressurized fluid in the actuator cylinder 72. The actuator 70 may be used in conjunction with a mechanically driven actuator 58 used to move a valve 32, with the fluidically driven actuator 70 being used to maintain the valve 32 into a desired position.
