A Sheet feeding apparatus (1) has two or more rollers (4, 5) rotatable about respective fixed axes (6, 7) which are spaced apart and which lie substantially parallel with each other. An endless friction belt (8)is mounted for rotation about the rollers (4, 5). A sheet retard device (3) is associated with the belt (8), and a sheet feed nip (10) is between the belt (8) and the retard device (3). The sheet feed nip (10) is located intermediate the or two of the rollers (4, 5) and/or the belt (8) is stretchable. There is also provided a sheet feeding apparatus with a sensing means associated with a sheet output, which causes the apparatus to stop when a sheet is prevented from exiting.
