PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple-structured emergency stop device of an elevator having no safety problem. SOLUTION: A slider consists of a first slider 21 moving downward to come into contact with the guide surface of a guide rail 4 and a second slider 30 moving upward to come into contact with the guide surface of the guide rail 4, and the first and second sliders 21 and 30 are disposed above and below a car 1 of the elevator, respectively. A connecting rod 10 fixed to a rope 7 of a speed adjuster is extended sideways of the car 1, and the connecting rod 10 is connected with the first and second sliders 21 and 30 by a connecting means. When a speed adjuster 6 is operated in moving the car 1 upward, the first slider 21 is operated; when the speed adjuster 6 is operated in moving the car 1 downward, the second slider 30 is operated.
